What are Intraocular lenses or IOLs?

Intraocular Lenses or IOLs are artificial lenses made of plastic, acrylic, or silicone for implantation after cataract removal surgery. The IOL material range from rigid plastic to flexible foldable lenses. Most are coated to block ultraviolet light and protect your eyes from the sun's harmful rays.

What is a Custom IOLs?

Monofocal IOL lenses have a single focusing distance. Eyeglasses will generally be needed for reading or close up work.

Multifocal IOL lenses provide both distance and near focus at the same time. The lens has different zones set at different powers.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOL lenses sharpen near and far vision, but with only one corrective zone, which “extends” to cover both distances. This may mean less effort to re-focus between distances.

Accommodative IOL lenses work with eye muscle movements, allowing focusing at different distances.

Toric IOL lenses correct for astigmatism which is a refractive error caused by an uneven curve in your cornea or lens.

Does insurance cover IOLs?

Only the monofocal IOL is covered by Medicare and insurance. Custom IOL lenses such as the Multifocal, Extended Depth of Focus, Accommodative and Toric IOL lenses are not covered.
