Are My Cataracts Ripe?

Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over age forty. A cataract can be the reason sharp objects become blurred, bright colors become dull, seeing at night is more difficult, or eyeglasses no longer provide clear vision.

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, you cataract(s) may be ripe and it may be time to see an ophthalmologist for a cataract evaluation.

What are cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye. This natural crystalline lens, located behind the iris, works just like the lens of a camera - focusing light images on the retina, sending images to the brain.

What are some signs and symptoms of cataracts?

  • Blurry or foggy vision
  • Colors seem dull or muted
  • Details are hard to see
  • Eyeglasses no longer working
  • Light seems overly bright or glaring
  • More light is needed for reading
  • Night vision decreasing
  • Seeing halos around lights

How are cataracts formed?

With aging and some medical conditions, proteins and fibers within the lenses to break down and clump together resulting in clouding of the lenses. Also, the lenses in your eyes may become less flexible, less clear, and thicker.

Why are my glasses not working anymore?

As the cataract progresses, the clouding becomes worse. Cataracts usually happen in both eyes, but not always at the same rate. The cataract in one eye may be worse than the other. This causes a difference in vision between eyes. At some point, you may notice eyeglasses may not help one or both eyes because the cataract is blocking light from passing through the lens resulting in less than 20/20 corrected vision.
