What is a subspecialist?
A general ophthalmologist is an eye MD who has completed a medical internship and an ophthalmology residency. An eye subspecialist is an ophthalmologist who has completed additional fellowship-training in a specific field such as cornea and external diseases, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, ocularplastic, pediatric ophthalmology, retina, etc.

Who is an eye care provider or ECP?
An optometrist or a general ophthalmologist are also called eye care providers or ECPs.
Licensed opticians may only dispense eyewear in pursuant to a doctor's prescription.
We recommend seeing an eye doctor at least every other year if you don't have any present medical eye concern.
